The row of houses to the right of centre led down to the intersection with Fore Street. Standard construction practice was to have a brick fire-wall between each house and you can see them extending above the slate roofs. I don’t remember any house fires but chimney fires did occur; nobody paid to have their chimneys cleaned and, at least in our house, an unintentional chimney fire every few years did the job with much roaring and black smoke. No need to call the fire brigade!
